The Training

THSD uses positive reinforcement based operant conditioning. We use a variety of reinforcers (treats, praise, toys, petting, favorite behaviors like getting in the car) to reward desirable behaviors.

THSD trainers never scold, strike, jerk leashes, withhold food or use other aversive techniques on the dogs. Because of this, our dogs are not afraid to make mistakes or try out new behaviors. They enjoy training and you will always see an upbeat enthusiastic attitude when they work.

THSD uses a "bridge" to help the dogs learn behaviors. A bridge can be a clicker, whistle, the word "YES" or any other short, precise signal. When the dog gives a desirable behavior, the trainer has a way to precisely mark the behavior using the bridge. In effect, the bridge takes a snapshot of the behavior so it becomes clear to the dog exactly what he did to earn the reward.

THSD also uses a variable schedule of reinforcement. The frequency and type of reward changes to keep it interesting and fun for the dog and the trainer.

The combination of positive reinforcement and using a bridge results in highly motivated dogs who enjoy their work and are not afraid to try new behaviors to solve new problems. That is how you get Service Dogs who use all their training and then go beyond to save their partners' lives in emergencies.
