Service Dogs, Inc. (SDI), an Austin-based nonprofit, announces the addition of Psychiatric Service Dogs for PTSD to its nearly 40 years of providing working Service Dogs to veterans and others in need.
“We receive more requests from veterans with PTSD than anything else,” SDI Founder and CEO Sheri Soltes says. “With the community’s help, we are answering the call.”
Psychiatric Service Dogs assist individuals with PTSD. They interrupt nightmares and panic attacks, help filter overstimulating environments, fetch medications and perform other customized tasks.
SDI provides the dogs and extensive training free of charge to clients.
“We are committed to serving those who sacrificed so much for our freedom,” Soltes says. “As our first responder clients have told us, ‘a dog can reach into your heart where no human can’ “.
SDI obtains all of their dogs from animal shelters. Since their founding in 1988, they have adopted and placed over 1,000 dogs.
