Ranger – DA Dog
Several years ago, we placed Ranger, a handsome yellow Lab with a lovely woman to help her with the challenges of living with Multiple Sclerosis.
Over time, her condition worsened to the point where she could no longer care for Ranger and in an act of selfless compassion for his well-being, she gave him back to THSD.
The timing was perfect, as was Ranger’s extremely calm temperament to place him as our first Service Dog working with victim support in the criminal justice system.
In August, we placed Ranger with the Montgomery District Attorney’s office in Conroe, Texas. Ranger is handled by and lives with the extraordinary Pam Traylor, Victim Assistance Coordinator there. Ranger comforts children when they are interviewed about abuse, other crimes and divorce. Pam reports that Ranger has already accompanied one little girl to court. The little girl had met Ranger and asked if he could come with her when she had to testify against her abuser. They walked into court together, the little girl holding his leash. He laid down by the witness chair and looked at her calmly as she testified for over an hour.
As you will see in the video, what surprised the attorneys and staff at the courthouse was how much Ranger comforts the adult victims, the D.A.s and the rest of the personnel at the courthouse, as well as providing a lifeline to the children.
Ranger’s success is attracting media attention:

We are very proud of what Pam and Ranger have accomplished to help wounded children. Ranger, DA Dog, may very well be one of the first steps to healing for these poor wounded kids.
