Duties
Participate in evaluation of shelter dogs
Train assigned behaviors for dogs
Maintain training records and provide updates
Maintain dogs’ health
Take dogs to veterinarian
Feed and exercise dogs
Perform husbandry procedures
Maintain cleanliness of kennels, play yards and training building on a daily basis
Keep a safe working environment for the animals, staff, clients, volunteers and guests
Comply with Assistance Dogs International accreditation standards for kennel and dog care
Communicate effectively and openly with all SDI employees, representatives, customers, donors, their representatives, and clients
Set a positive example to all SDI staff, clients, volunteers and guests
Communicate effectively with representatives of other departments and provide results to departmental requests
Identify opportunities for improvement and work with team to continually improve SDI
Assist in tours and educational programs
Requirements
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Must be knowledgeable in operant conditioning and classical conditioning, both in theory and with hands-on experience, and be able to apply these to training Hearing, Service and Facility Dogs
Minimum of a high school diploma. Some college or a college degree is preferred.
At least 2 years’ experience training dogs.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak to Guests and Team Members.
Physical Demands:
Able to remain on one’s feet, standing, walking, bending and/or stooping on cement for extended periods.
Being outside in all weather
Occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds
Ability to understand and navigate animal body language and temperament
Basic math skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to use and/or learn Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs and SalesForce
Have a good understanding and proficiency in canine health and husbandry techniques
Have a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation
